No route at Smith has more pitches of climbing than this towering line to the top of Smith Summit. It'll bring joy to the hearts of many diehard adventure climbers; others will be less joyful, coping with swaths of bad rock, run-outs, and a seven rappel descent. Pitch 1: (5.9) Jam the same flake crack as The Struggle Begins, but step right after clipping the fourth bolt to an anchor below an obvious crack. Pitch 2 (5.10c) Risking a factor two fall, boulder up and right, joining the Beholder Arete. Pitch 3: (5.10d) Easy climbing leads to a bolt-protected crux, giving way to a trad crack. Pitch 4: (5.10c) Jam a fist crack and move right to a sport finish ending at a pleasant ledge. Pitch 5: (5.9) Continue past four spaced bolts in so-so rock. Pitch 6: (5.10a) After a brief patch of bad rock, solid knobs lead to an anchor. Pitch 7: (5.10d) The best pitch on the route ascends great rock in an exquisite setting.
