The easiest route to top of this landmark has more of an alpine vibe than anything else at Smith. The climbing itself isn't special, but somehow standing on the summit makes it all worth it. Free soloed in 1935 by Jonny Bissel, that was the first recorded ascent anywhere at Smith. It's unnerving in places, but never hard or overly dangerous (unless you somehow fall off). Start left of a juniper tree in the center of the south side of the tower. Pitch 1: (5.4) Clear a bulge at the start, following the path of least resistance to an easily missed anchor on the left. Pitch 2: (5.1) Spiral along exposed ledges to the right, to a short finishing corridor, or keep traversing to an exposed, easy exit.
