The Buttermilks are one of the world's most famous bouldering areas. Stunning, massive, quartz monzonite boulders punctuate rolling foothills at the base of Bishop's nearly 14,000' alpine skyline. Known primarily for its committing highballs, the Buttermilks offer historic problems of all shapes and sizes. Whether it's your first visit or fiftieth, KAYA makes your Buttermilks days smoother, safer, and more dialed. Quartz monzonite climbs similarly to granite with a range of finish textures from broken glass kitty litter to wind and water sculpted marble smooth patina. Abundant sunshine and crisp clear cold winter days make the Buttermilks one of the world's most reliable and easily accessible test piece bouldering areas. Although primarily a winter destination, late spring mornings and early autumn evenings can offer excellent shoulder season conditions. The Buttermilks are a fragile high desert landscape that are, for much of the year, quiet and empty. But when the temps get good, boulderers descend on the area from around the world and hundreds of cars line the road beneath the main area. Do your best to keep your personal impact small and maintain climbers access for generations to come. -Drive slow on Buttermilk Rd. -Stay on trail in the boulders. -Don't crush the brush. Use existing campsites and parking areas, and try not to place pads on vegetation. -Keep your dog/cat/pig/pony on a leash and clean up after it. Better yet, leave the furry ones at home! Much of the off-trail destruction in the Buttermilks come not from humans but from their pets. -Pack it in, pack it out. Leave nothing (including human waste) and help out by picking up extra micro trash you may find. -Respect fire bans! Check https://www.fs.usda.gov/inyo/ for current regulations. If fires are allowed during your visit, make sure it is dead and out before leaving or going to sleep. Wildfire is a serious concern in Buttermilk country. -Follow @bishopclimbingrangers and @bishopclimbers for current issues, events, and volunteer opportunities. From downtown Bishop, head west on CA 168 / West Line St. Drive out of town and start climbing uphill towards the mountains. After 7.3 miles you'll see the road sign for Buttermilk Rd on your right. This dirt road accesses all the Buttermilk sub areas of this guide. Please drive slow on the road (25 mph!) and park such that you aren't blocking traffic. At the Buttermilk main area parking there is a pit toilet and many dispersed camping options.
