One of the world's famous climbing areas, Eldorado Canyon has played a role in the evolution of our sport since the beginning. Because Eldo was one of the earliest free-climbing destinations in America, some of the earliest bouldering also took place here. Roadside problems have ascents dating back to the 60s, and for over fifty years local climbers have tested themselves on the same lines. However, several decades of generations pushing the limits has yielded hundreds of new problems, many of them just as roadside as the first. The finest collection of elite-level bouldering around lies in Eldo. Old-school testpieces have seen a resurgence as of late, and often the best hard lines form a steady stream of traffic during the winter. The magic of Eldorado Canyon has captivated many pioneers of world-class first ascent bouldering. Dave Graham has made his mark on Eldo with five star lines such as "Barrel Rider" and "Suspension of Disbelief." Kevin Jorgeson added "The Heist," which may be the state's best V12 outside of the alpine. Drew Ruana is hard at work filling in obvious gaps, with new lines like "Grinch SDS" and "Fort Knox." Lastly, Daniel Woods, Drew Ruana, and obviously Shawn Rabatou have made the most indelible mark in Eldo bouldering history by adding Colorado's first V17/9A. "Megatron" may be the hardest problem in the world. Whether you're here to push your limits in the crisp cold, or to simply enjoy sunny days in a beautiful state park, Eldorado Canyon will not disappoint. Eldorado Canyon is located less than a mile west of Eldorado Springs; a small, peaceful town with few amenities. From the town, simply drive up Eldorado Springs Drive (a paved road that turns to dirt inside the town), until passing a ranger station and entering the canyon. 700 foot walls of sheer, maroon sandstone will mark the entrance. DO NOT SPEED THROUGH THE TOWN OF ELDO, AND PARK IN DESIGNATED SPOTS ONLY. Eldorado Springs has a dust issue and parking is very limited, so respect the locals.
