Gunpowder Falls State Park is home to some fantastic bouldering and lovely isolated wilderness. It is easy to forget that you are only a 15-30 minute drive from downtown Baltimore.

Although at first the crags within the state park may seem isolated and disjointed, once you spend some time climbing here you will realize they are all within a 15-20 minute drive from one another. Hitting one crag in the morning, taking a lunch break, then going to another crag in the afternoon is how I love to spend my days off. Or after work, if the weather is nice, getting outside... Or after work, if the weather is nice, getting outside instead of the gym couldn't be easier with most of the boulders at Gunpowder being 10-15 minutes away from the Movement gyms in Baltimore. Most of the crags at Gunpowder Falls are excellent areas for climbers venturing outdoors from the gym for the first time. There are many boulder problems in the lower grade range that are not too tall and have good landings. That being said there are certainly boulder problems for the local crushers too. The V5-V8 range really shines at Gunpowder and if you are looking for something harder there are several high quality open projects in the double digit range waiting for first ascents! This guide was written to document the local boulders and increase accessibility to the growing climbing community in Baltimore. Many of the boulders have likely been climbed long before the first known or documented ascents listed in this guide. Please reach out to the authors if you know more accurate history! Special thanks to Mark "Indy" Kochte, Justin Piteleski, John Brunson, Mark Profeta, Rob B., Justin Meserve, Robin Close, Dana Miller, Mike Kremer, and many other local MD developers who have done much of the early climbing at Gunpowder and have served as inspirations for the authors of this guide.
