High above the Loco-Motives lie a handful of fun boulders with a great view - the Sphinx Boulders. Although the Sphinx Boulders are only a few spread out blocs with a heinous hike, they make for a nice change of pace from the roadside Loco-Motives, especially if you're looking for a leg-burning approach. The Sphinx Boulders are also home to one of the coolest walls in Yankee Jim - the Narnia Cave.

Access: Public land. Leave no trace!
Other Considerations: The Sphinx Boulders are in the backcountry in prime Grizzly Bear territory. At a minimum, you should boulder with multiple people, bring bear spray and make a lot of noise. Make sure to check yourself for ticks after bouldering here in the spring. Also, this is a popular area for hunters. Make sure to wear bright colors and make some noise during hunting season."
Summer Climate: Hot and dry. You're going to want to avoid the sun any way you can. There's a little reprieve from the sun in the Narnia Cave, but the hike is gonna make you sweat for it.
Fall Climate: Cool and dry. Perfect conditions from September to early November. Like most areas, fall is the best time of year at the Sphinx Boulders.
Winter Climate: Unless it's a very dry winter, most of the Sphinx Boulder will be snowed in and unclimbable from December to March. The main exception is Bob Loblaw's Law Block. The Law Block catches a lot of sun and melts quickly in the winter.
Spring Climate: The most inconsistent season, primarily due to rain. The temperatures are usually great, but make sure to check the forecast for precipitation before you head out.
The Rock: Gneiss
Elevation: 5600' to 6000'
Restroom: Forest Service toilet at the parking area. Use it before you start hiking or dig a deep hole.
The Drive: Drive as per the Loco-Motives. Park here.
The Hike: From the parking, continue along the dirt road past the green gate until you reach the large circular parking area with the outhouse. Find the trail on the southwest side of the round about and start hiking. After about 10-15 minutes the trail crosses a small stream, don't cross it. Instead, head left off trail up the hill. Continue up the hill angling slightly right for about 5-10 minutes through a mostly open meadow. Bob Loblaw's Law Block is located a few hundred yards up the meadow on a small bench slightly hidden by trees. See area descriptions for other directions. It's about a 20-25 minute hike to the Law Block Area and a hard 40-60 minute hike to Narnia.
