Triassic is a great zone that hosts tons of sandstone boulders in a very condensed area. The boulders are accessible year round, except for rare occasions after a heavy snowfall. The best climbing seasons are Fall, Winter, and Spring. The majority of the boulders fall within the easy to moderate grade range, and many of them can be climbed with just one or two pads. This, coupled with the area’s short approaches and high concentration of boulders, make it a great spot for beginners and families. But for the hard-bodies out there, don’t worry- there are several double digit boulders scattered around, as well as many hard projects yet to be climbed. Because of its proximity to Joe’s Valley, climbers sometimes travel to Triassic for the day when Joe’s has inclement weather, since Triassic often remains dry and sunny. This area is also much less traveled than Joe’s, so it can offer a nice secluded reprieve from the Joe’s crowds. The Triassic boulders were found by Darren Knezek in 2002, and a wave of development quickly ensued. Since then, further development has been slow, and some hard projects are still waiting for ascents. If you continue down Dinosaur Quarry Road, you will reach the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, which is still actively excavating fossils to this day. Bones from this quarry can be found in museums around the world. Though it may feel like you’re out in the middle of nowhere, don’t forget to treat the land with respect and practice Leave No Trace ethics. As the number of climbers visiting this destination continues to grow, it is more important than ever that we give climbers a good reputation as stewards of the outdoors. The interwoven dirt roads can get you to the parking pins several different ways. The recommended roads to take are highlighted as trails in the app. Some of the dirt roads require decent clearance, but most cars should be able to get to the parking pins. If it is snowy the roads may not be accessible, though this is rare. If this is the case, it is still possible to park on Dinosaur Quarry Road and make the slightly longer approach into the boulders. Also, be aware that if it starts raining hard the roads can become muddy and difficult to drive on.
