Overview Description Mt Rubidoux is a regional park in Riverside CA just 5 minutes from downtown and nestled amongst beautiful Victorian houses. This boulder strewn hill has a deep history in Riverside and in climbing. Having been established for decades, this stomping grounds for the original Stonemasters is characterized by numerous slabs, cracks, and a surprising amount of highballs. The area saw a surge during the 80s due to outdoor bouldering competitions and is often the first taste of real rock for many new, local climbers. Rubi is also often used to practice placing gear and building anchors. It is great for beginners in boulders and routes alike as there are plenty of lower grade climbs and the hill is easily accessible. But, don't let the grades fool you. Many of the climbs can still pack a punch with more complex movement than you anticipate. The best time to climb Mt. Rubidoux is Fall to Spring. With low elevation and not much tree cover, summer is exposed. Early morning sessions until midday are still possible during the summer if you have a half day and want to stay near home. Local Ethic Mt. Rubidoux is a highly accessible regional park. As with many areas with such open access, there is also litter and graffiti. Please be kind to the park. Pick up trash and clean up after yourself. Trash cans are available around the hill along the main trail. Doggy bags are available at the park entrance. Please be a leading example to others of the care and gratitude that should be given to outdoor spaces, however small. I hope that, with more climbers on the boulders, the boulders will see less graffiti. Maintenance and oversight of an area is difficult and resources are limited. Please connect with local organizations and become a steward of your local outdoor spaces. Restrooms are available at Ryan Bonaminio Park Additional Info/History Mt. Rubidoux is a staple for Riverside locals. If you grew up in Riverside, you probably spent time at Rubi late at night with your friends overlooking the cityscape. If you have spent time at Rubi after sunset, you have probably also heard the rumors that there are tunnels that run beneath the hill to the Mission Inn. Some speculate that these were used to move alcohol during the Prohibition. Now the rumored tunnels are for those fond of ghost stories and mysterious lore. Over the past several years Mt Rubidoux has become a very popular place for fitness and health enthusiasts. On any morning you are likely to find families and pets, bikers, runners, yogis and more. When you are done getting your morning workout, the hill is just a few minutes from multiple other attractions such as Fairmount Park, the historic Mission Inn, and the museums and galleries of downtown Riverside. While downtown has seen a surge of delicious niche eateries, don’t overlook the classics. Hit Back to the Grind for coffee, art, board games, and open mic nights. Visit Tios Tacos for Mexican food, beautiful, bizarre junk art, and strawberry horchata. Ample parking and restrooms are available at Ryan Bonaminio Park just down the street from the hill. Walk north up San Andreas Ave to reach the Mt Rubidoux Regional Park entrance and trailhead. 5000 Tequesquite Ave, Riverside, CA 92506 When coming from the west (LA, Ontario, etc) Take the 60 East. Exit on Market St. and continue south (right) Right at 14th St Left on Palm Ave Slight right to continue on Tequesquite Ave. Ryan Bonaminio Park will be on your left. When traveling from the east/south east (Moreno Valley, Temecula, etc.) Take the 215 North. Continue to the 91 West Exit to 14th St, go west (right) Left on Palm Ave Slight right to continue on Tequesquite Ave. Ryan Bonaminio Park will be on your left. When traveling from the south west (OC, Corona, etc) Take the 91 East Exit to 14th St, go west (left) Left on Palm Ave Slight right to continue on Tequesquite Ave. Ryan Bonaminio Park will be on your left.
