Summersville Lake was created by daming up the Gauley River. In the summer, it's the perfect swimming hole, but in the fall, the Army Corps of Engineers starts draining the lake through the dam, making a world-class white water paradise on the Gauley River. The lake continues to drain, slowly revealing more and more boulders in the alien landscape of the lakebed. The lakebed drains until December 1, then starts to slowly refill in April.
