Bear Lake Road has slowly come into it’s own over the years. It not only is home to some of the hardest problems in the park, but it provides a lovely contrast to the long hikes and alpine adventure of Chaos Canyon and Tyndall Gorge. There are a number of scattered erratics that were left over from the massive glacier that poured out from the high peaks of RMNP some 12,000 years ago. The Circuit, as it’s affectionately called, is a great place to boulder both early and late in the season, when the park is quiet. Season: The Bear Lake Road Circuit can provide great conditions as early as late winter (if snowfall is light). Spring and fall are when the area shines. The best spring conditions are found between mid-March until mid-May, however a snowstorm can shut things down at any time. It is usually quite warm at this lower elevation during the middle of summer, although climbing is viable from mid-May to mid-September. The Circuit has the best conditions in the mid to late fall (from mid-Sept through the end of October), and is usually shut down by snow sometime in mid-November. Directions: From the Highway 36 entrance to RMNP, drive 0.2 mile and turn left onto Bear Lake Rd. Problems are scattered along almost the entire length of the 10-mile road.
