Remember that this area is relatively new and hasn’t received much traffic. Tread lightly on top outs and be on the lookout for loose rock. Geology: The Browse Boulders are located on the eastern flank of the Pine Valley Mountains. These mountains are the remains of the largest exposed laccolith on Earth. A laccolith is a dome shaped magma body that forms as manga injects or intrudes between sedimentary layers. The deforms and bows the sedimentary rock layers above the magma. The deformed sedimentary rock will eventually erode away and expose the intrusive igneous rock that is more resistant to erosion. In this case the laccolith is composed of a granite-like rock called quartz monzonite. Since laccoliths typically intrude at relatively shallow depths, they often have pocket-like features from gasses being produced. Overall the rock at Browse is very featured with pockets and flakes. From either north or south. Take exit 30 to Browse. One the west side of the overpass is a dirt road (FR-037) that heads up to Browse Guard Station. Continue west on this road from the start of the dirt for 3.5 miles. Here you will park at a large parking lot with a gate (the gate closes seasonally. If the gate is open you can drive an additional .2 miles to a sloped pullout on the south side just past the “Pocket Prints” boulder. There are several additional zones, but the majority of problems can be accessed from an old logging road at the small pullout past “Pocket Prints”.
