Overview: To see these boulders is to want to climb them. The oceanside beauty of Fear of the Inevitable will inspire the poet inside, while the unforgettable terror of Stoney Whiteboots will give you sweaty palms. The rock quality doesn’t always match the advertisement, but the location – a slab of stone at the edge of the Pacific Ocean – is pure magic. If left to its own devices, the coastal sandstone becomes coated with a layer of sand, so bring a brush with natural fibers. The holds on the best problems clean up well, and once they do, all that’s left is for you to climb them. Conditions: The large body of water to the west evens out any temperature extremes, so you can climb here year round. Keep in mind that you’ll be on the wild coast with no shelter to speak of, so come prepared for anything. While the Stoney Whiteboots Boulder doesn’t require low tide, the base will get wet when the seas are up. Rules: Open sunrise to sunset. No dogs are allowed off the paved roads. No climbing for 3-5 days after rain. No wire brushes. Bathrooms: The Gerstle Cove Campground to the south has the only toilet in Salt Point State Park. Land Manager: Salt Point State Park Parking: Park in a large pullout on the east side of CA-1, 0.7 miles north of Gerstle Cove and about 20 miles from the intersection of CA-1 and CA-116. You’ll know it’s the right one because of the call box in the middle. Approach: The criss-crossing trails to the west of the parking are a metaphor for free will. Life is a garden of forking paths, and with each decision you make in life, you set yourself on a particular future while excluding others. The choice is yours, so take the largest trail seaward from the parking. Each time it splits, follow the most well-traveled option toward the sea. It’s confusing, but you should join the ocean somewhere near the Quarry. Accessibility: 1/4 mile of dirt trail lead to The Quarry. From here, rock scrambling is required for the other areas.
