Overview: Don’t think of Shroomland as a single area, but rather four small clusters of boulders. This is the hardest, most-awesomely-textured sandstone at Salt Point, and mandatory brushing is not required. Each cluster has its own character, so let’s look at them in turn. The Shroom Boulders are sheltered from weather extremes by the nearby trees, and Vice Grip is one of the best V3s in the Bay. The Waterfall Boulders are perched on top of a sea cliff to the west, and everything on the Milano and Uplifted Boulders is excellent. The Johnny Cash Boulders lie in the woods through a meandering trail of waist-high grass. You can find a host of wonderful problems in the V0-V5 range. Finally, there is the League Bluff, which is amazing, in its own way, as a study in choss. Conditions: You can climb year round, and expect your typical anything-goes coastal weather at the Waterfall Boulders. The Shroom Boulders and Johnny Cash Boulders, being inland a bit, tend to be more mild. Still, it goes without saying that you shouldn’t climb when the rock is wet and wait 3-5 days after rain. Rules: Open sunrise to sunset. Doggies aren’t allowed off the paved roads. No climbing for 3-5 days after rain. No wire brushes. Bathrooms: The Gerstle Cove Campground to the south has the only toilet in Salt Point State Park. Land Manager: Salt Point State Park Parking: For the Shroom and Waterfall Boulders, park in a pullout on the east side of CA-1, 2.0 miles north of Gerstle Cove and about 21.5 miles from the intersection of CA-1 and CA-116. You can see the Shroom Boulders immediately off the road, so the pullout is easy to recognize. For the Johnny Cash Boulders and League Bluff, park in a pullout on the left with a small wooden fence, 0.1 mile farther to the north. Approach: Follow directions for the individual areas below. Regardless of your plan, you shouldn’t be hiking more than 10 minutes. Accessibility: The shorter approaches to the eastern areas have at least 100 feet of stomping through waist high grasses. For the Waterfall Boulders, 800 feet of flat dirt trail leads to a slippery hill for the last 100 feet.
