Icicle Canyon is the true heart of Leavenworth bouldering. Further up canyon, older areas like The Sword and Egg Rock are home to great medium-sized circuits as well as some difficult testpieces. Formerly-obscure areas like the Bond Boulders, the Straightaway Boulders, the JY Boulders, and the Pretty Boulders are home to some new-school classics just waiting to be climbed on, as are recently-developed areas farther up the hill like Fern Gully, The Airfield, and The Locksmith – the further you hike, the more solitude you’ll have. For folks willing to explore for new problems, the Icicle has the most potential of any area in this guide. The Icicle is a true boulderer’s paradise, offering a lifetime’s worth of climbing in a beautiful, accessible setting. Icicle Road leaves Leavenworth from Icicle Junction, by the 76 gas station and the mini-golf course on the west side of town. All mileages for climbing areas are given from this intersection with Highway 2. The brown roadside mile markers in Icicle Canyon aren’t 100% accurate, but can be quite helpful in getting your bearings. As you travel up most of the canyon, the road heads northwest; for the sake of simplicity in description, Icicle Creek is always south of the road, and points down-canyon are always due west. The best way to find the bouldering areas in Icicle Canyon is to read the area directions and then use the mileage to locate some sort of landmark. Unfortunately, the best landmarks for some areas are adjacent areas; between-area mileages are provided for this purpose, though they won’t be precise enough for the tough-to-find areas. With time, each spot will become obvious and you’ll be able to impress your friends by rattling off area after area as you zoom down canyon.
