The white, compact granite and flat, grassy landings at Mountain Home are a pleasant addition to Leavenworth’s wide array of rock types and landscapes. And unlike the Druid Stones, one is able to drive to the top of the steep hillside and actually walk down to go climbing. The setting at Mountain Home is comparable to Gold Bar’s Clearcut area, both victims of the wide-scale logging operations which bring the northwest boulderer such mixed blessings. A wide variety of climbs can be found in the main Mountain Home areas of The Star Wars Boulder, The Pasture, and The South Seas, with something to satisfy everyone. There are also a number of newly-developed areas along the road like Geronimo, The Premonition, and Full Time Night Woman that offer a few difficult testpieces and are well worth their minimal approaches. The open hillside of Mountain Home Road typically receives all-day sun and makes for a great evening spot. Mountain Home would also offer prime winter conditions for the gung-ho climber willing to snowshoe or ski up the unplowed road, but few boulderers feel the need to make the slog. During the rest of the year, the approach is mellow and the scenery fantastic. As at most Leavenworth areas, keep an eye out for rattlesnakes on warm summer days. Please help to keep this wonderful spot litter-free and access-friendly by picking up after yourself, sticking to trails, not drag-racing up the road, and refraining from camping here, as tempting as it may be. While the hilltop vista of Mountain Home may seem like the middle of nowhere, it gets many more visitors than one may think, including patrols by the Chelan County Sheriff, and local residents have voiced very legitimate concerns about the traffic, vegetation damage, and fire ri Getting to the Mountain Home Road bouldering spots is easy. All of the bouldering is accessed along the side of the road, which departs left off of East Leavenworth Road less than 0.1 miles from Highway 2, near the Safeway on the east side of town. The main Mountain Home Road areas are accessed from the small right-hand pullout 4.3 miles up the road, in the clearcut and across from a large white slab.
