The Narrows is one of the most majestic and inspiring areas of the canyon for a rock climber. Large granite walls come right down to the roadside, streams bubble down from mysterious side canyons, and massive boulders peek out of the trees if you know where to look. The Narrows has a long history of rock climbing going back to the early ‘70s. Many climbers have contributed routes to the area including Rodney Ley, Craig Luebben, Mark Wilford, Paul Heyliger, Steve Allen, Rodney Ley, Greg Martin, Mike Duncan, Steve McCorkel, and Gregg Purnell to name a few. Many of the routes were done in ground up style, but Crossing Over (F.A. early ‘90s) in the Middle Narrows was the first route bolted on rappel and signaled a shift toward a new ethic of route establishment. After about 2000 or so, another wave of climbers began developing The Narrows in a purely sport climbing style. Climbers like Paul Heyliger, Derek Peavey, Ken Gibson, Bryan Beavers, Ken Duncan, Dede Humphrey, Noah Kaufman, Jason Tarry, R.D. Pascoe and the author continue to be active in this section of the canyon. On top of all that work, in 2015 the Narrows Blocs bouldering began being developed due to the tireless efforts of local climbers Sam Rothstein, Brett Hoffman, Nick Perl and many others. The Narrows is generally considered the section of the canyon between Stove Prairie Road / Steven’s Gulch and the Narrows Campground. A four mile long section of the canyon comprising 25 different climbing areas. Located between Stove Prairie Road / Steven’s Gulch and the Narrows Campground, spanning roughly four miles of canyon with numerous roadside crags and pullouts.
