Joe's Valley has been a world class bouldering destination for decades. Given the beautiful sandstone, seemingly endless problems in a variety of grades and, in many cases, literally roadside approaches, this comes as no surprise. High desert elevations provide long seasons of good climbing conditions. Take your pick between easy camping on public lands, designated BLM/USFS campsites or a multitude of lodging options in the nearby towns. Prime seasons are spring and fall, but it is possible to climb at any time of year. Summers can get quite hot but provide a good playground for vacation style climbing. In the winter you may have to wait out snow or other bad weather, but the temps can also be super sendy.
IMPORTANT: Don't climb on wet rock and allow it to dry fully after a storm - usually at least 24 hours (check weather conditions at https://www.joesvalleyfest.com/weather )
New Joe's will typically be your warmest option and has a great concentration of a variety of grades. The Wash, across Highway 57 from New Joe's, has a slightly longer approach than most Joe's climbing, but this can make for a great way to get away from the crowds. Left Fork and Right Fork are great options during the prime season as you can chase shade or sun all day, as you desire. Dairy Canyon is slightly higher in elevation so can also be a good way to beat the heat. The Wash is another slightly long approach by Joe's standards, but it is well worth the hike to sample the offerings there. Nothing is too far away in Joe's Valley, so it is easy to sample several subareas in a given day and still make it back into town to grab a send donut at the Food Ranch or a celebratory milkshake from Fatty's.
The majority of Joe's Valley bouldering is located on public land operated by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The Joe's Valley Coalition, the area's Local Climbing Organization, partners closely with these organizations as well as the local community to maintain access to and assist in stewardship of the lands. Be a good steward while you are in Joe's. Don't climb on wet rock and allow it to dry fully after a storm - usually at least 24 hours (check weather conditions at https://www.joesvalleyfest.com/weather ). Clean your tick marks. Pick up trash. Stay on the established trails. No wire brushes. No chipping holds. Treat people with respect. And have fun!
About grades. We have aimed to make grades as consistent as possible across Joe's. And have taken into account that height differences can impact grades. In the cases where a given climb is particularly height sensitive, you'll see a slash grade in the climb description.
