Subalpine summertime bouldering doesn't get much easier than this! The Smithbrook area is comprised of mostly all roadside boulders with generally good landings and a wide spread of difficulties to accomodate climbers of all levels. Shade or sun can be sought out in the Smithbrook area and the rock is of the same high quality granite that makes up the greater Stevens Pass area. The grains and crystals can be a bit aggressive but that also means the friction is excellent and the holds are plentiful. The Smithbrook area generally comes into season sometime in June as the snow melts away to allow access up the gravel Forest Service road. Conditions stay good until mid-to-late fall though the higher elevation means that snow and rain storms can come through without warning so plan your days accordingly. The Smithbrook area has been a 'locals' climbing haunt for decades with dozens and dozens of problems being climbed although many remained 'unnamed' and 'undocumented' besides word of mouth. As local climbing has increased in popularity the desire to properly document and share this area has grown. Enjoy the place, respect the rock and leave it better than you found it! Travel roughly 4.2 miles west of Stevens Pass on State Highway 2 and look for a 'Smithbrook' signed turnoff. Follow this Forest Service road (FS6700) for just a few minutes until boulders begin to appear on both sides of the road.
