Stevens Pass is the alpine region located 4,061 feet above sea level and straddling the Cascade crest along Washington State Highway 2 between the Seattle metropolitan area, and Leavenworth to the east. Stevens Pass is named for brilliant engineer John Frank Stevens whose vision led to the Great Northern Railroads traversing of the Cascades in the early 1900's. The area was originally known as Wellington but a devastating avalanche in 1910 wiped out the railroad and killed nearly 100 passengers in a story that shocked the nation! In order to save the local railroad business, rebranding was required and thus: Stevens Pass came to be. In recent years the 'Pass' as it's locally known has become a hub for winter time lift skiing and snowboarding, PCT hiking, downhill mountain biking and a slow but steady growth of alpine bouldering venues that provide summer season options when the rest of the valley floors are baking in the summer heat. The climbing in the Stevens Pass region is similar to the granite found to the west within the greater Skykomish River Valley though the grains and crystals tend to be a bit bigger and rougher on the skin. Many brilliant problems exist across a handful of areas; from roadside goodies along Smithbrook Road to secluded higher elevation clusters like Skyline Ridge, the Treasury or Lichtenberg Mountain, there is something for everyone here. Beware of biblical swarms of mosquitos in early summer months! Windy days and late summer provide respite from arguably the areas biggest detractor...... Coming from east or west; follow State Highway 2 to the apex of the pass then choose your parking location based on your climbing destination for that day! The various areas and subareas all have their own differing parking locations.
