Most of the boulders are short, with good landings, and most of the routes are below 5.10, making this area appealing to those new to climbing outside. It’s also a nice place to just hang out and enjoy the outdoors, swimming and basking in the sun. Access The parking, approach and boulders are all on Crown land. In the winter, Barry Lake Trail is groomed for sledding by the OFSC (Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs). Road vehicles are not permitted once it is groomed. It usually takes a few extra weeks for the compacted snow to melt, so if you visit in early spring, a 4x4 vehicle or tire chains might be a good idea. Good to Know The area is south-facing and traps the sun, making it a great place to visit early or late in the season. There are several established campsites around the lake, excellent swimming, and the lake is stocked with splake if you enjoy fishing. In the spring, you can usually drive to Battery Lake a couple of weeks earlier than The Hollow. History Alex Atkin found this area while checking out the lake for fishing potential. Most of the problems were established in the fall of 2023 by Alex and Brendan Kraiker. Alex and Matt Munkittrick established the climbing routes in the spring of 2024. Battery Lake is located approximately 15 km south of Calabogie, and the drive should take around 20 minutes. The last 5 km of the drive is on a gravel road that, as of 2025, has been fairly well maintained. Any regular passenger vehicle should have no problem making the drive. 0.0 km - From the Bogie General Store, drive east on Lanark Road (County Road 511). 4.8 km - Turn right onto Barryvale Road. 8.2 km - Turn left onto Tatty Hill Road. This will shortly turn into a gravel road. 13.4 km - You will come to an open staging area, marking the end of Tatty Hill Road. Continue through the staging area, as the road makes a slight right and becomes Barry Lake Trail. 15.2 km - After another 1.8 km you will see an unlabelled trail on the right. If road conditions and your vehicle allow, continue on this trail for 160 meters to a large open parking area. Otherwise, park here, making sure not to block the road. The boulders are located on the west side of the lake, near the outlet stream. The approach is pretty easy going and should take around 12 minutes. If you park at the first parking area, continue walking down the road to the second parking area, then follow the trail.
