This zone covers three separate crags located in the northeastern section of HCR. Each one of the crags is unique and offers climbing styles and grades different from the others. The most popular of these areas is the Goat Cave. Known for its steep 5.11s and 5.12s, the Goat Cave is the best area at the ranch to achieve an all-out pump. The southernmost crag, the Land of the Lost, is located inside a beautiful corridor and houses some great, though rarely-visited, 5.12s, as well as a few easier lines. The Mullet Buttress, sits directly between the Goat Cave and the Land of the Lost. The Mullet is home to a nice selection of vertical to slightly overhung 5.10s. Many people use the Mullet Buttress as a warm-up for their projects in the Goat Cave and the Land of the Lost. Conditions: Depending on which areas you visit, it’s possible to get all-day shade or sun from midmorning onward in the Northeast Crags, as each of the three areas in this chapter has different sun aspects. Consider the Goat Cave on rainy days—it’s one of only two crags in this chapter that’s home to fully sheltered routes. All three areas listed in this chapter are best approached from the North Pullout. Parking, however, is no longer permitted here, so you’ll need to tack on an additional 10-minute walk on the main road from the Trading Co. or you can consider renting an E-bike.
