An expansive boulder covered hillside north west of the canyon entrance, Outer Canyon gets year round sun, so it's a good place for Winter climbing, and gets quite hot in the summer. Some of the rock can be rather chossy, but a few gems are worth the hike including the massive Golden Egg, crystal covered Gemstone, and the Feature covered Dice Cube. Outer Canyon is also the only boulder area in Little Cottonwood where dogs are allowed. Some boulders are on private property, but Salt Lake City is OK with bouldering as long as people stay away from the clearly marked water tanks, control startion, and service road in the Shark Tooth and Pioneer sub areas. About a mile north west of the Little Cottonwood Park n' Ride, there is a dirt pullout on the east side of the road. Park here and head east up the trail at the south corner of the pullout to access the main boulders. The trail will head uphill for about an 8th of a mile to reach the Pioneer Boulders off to the left of the trail. Then the trail curves around to the south past the Golden Egg and onto The Shard and The Gemstone. To access The Dice Cube it is easier to hike along the dirt road heading south from the pullout until you reach the Meat Balls boulders, and head up the switchbacks from there.
