Chandler Park is a public park and a long-time developed climbing crag. Located north of Berryhill, on the outskirts of downtown Tulsa, the hills here are filled with limestone and were originally developed into a limestone quarry. In 1958, Claude Chandler donated 100 acres of land to the City of Tulsa to be established into a city park. Located north of Berryhill, on the outskirts of downtown Tulsa, the hills here are filled with limestone and were originally developed into a limestone quarry. In 1958, Claude Chandler donated 100 acres of land to the City of Tulsa to be established into a city park. Climbing has been happening here since the 60s or 70s with Boy Scout troops setting up top ropes and climbers establishing long traverses as trainers for larger goals and much bigger climbs in Yosemite and Colorado. This destination is a prime example of an urban crag and a local treasure. Chandler Park is where Tulsa climbers have been cutting their teeth for the better half of a century. The main Chandler area, known to climbers as The Autobahn, is a labyrinth of limestone and a popular walking area for families. These climbs are generally tall, ranging from 10-20ft, and have sharp or slippery holds or both. Most of the moderate climbs established here were originally done as top rope climbs in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. All of this means that despite the large amount of climbing and proximity to the city, this is a challenging area that more often takes some getting used to, especially for outdoor beginners. Plenty of great and even beginner-friendly climbing can be found here but the climbing can also be scary and tough on your fingers, so be aware and selective. In the fall and winter when all the trees have lost their leaves, this area boasts a good view of the Arkansas River and hills to the north. The climbs on the east side of the park are spaced out around one of the main old quarry sites, now a newly developed lower loop area with nice walking trails. While it is a bummer that much of the natural rock in the eastern area is quarried away and most of the remaining rock is unclimbable choss, we may not have had access to Chandler at all if it wasn't first a quarry. The Control and Resistance block as well as the Wings of Steel area are almost the only quality walls in eastern Chandler Park. Parking is free throughout Chandler Park. There are dozens of pullouts and parking areas throughout the park, making approaches to almost any wall less than a 2-minute hike. Most areas or walls are accessed best via dirt pullouts or parking areas in the upper loop near the community center. The Buttermilk Moustache and Control & Resistance walls are generally the only exceptions and are best accessed from the lower loop.
