Weather/Climbing Season
Eastern Oklahoma is a very humid climate year-round and reaches temperatures of over 100°F in the summer. As a result, the ideal climbing season is usually only 4 months between late October and early March. Depending on the year, pleasant climbing can be extended into late April for a total of 6 months of solid climbing.
Sandstone makes up the vast majority of the rock in the area meaning that friction and conditions are critical. However, if its warm and you still want to climb hard, consider climbing on limestone. Veteran local climbers tell tales of hard sends on the slick limestone of Chandler Park even into the high 70s Fahrenheit.
Ethics
The main thing to know about climbing in the Tulsa area is that the sandstone is relatively fragile and soft. Regardless of the area, ALL climbers need to know that sandstone is weakened by the rain and will break if not given enough time to dry. This is especially true here. A general rule in the area is to give the sandstone 3 days to dry for every full day of rain. Moisture hides inside sandstone and will keep it wet even when it does not appear wet on the outside. This can be very inconvenient for the traveling climber and even the local climber, but when a climb breaks, it breaks forever. If it rained recently but you still want to climb, consider climbing at Chandler Park or visiting a local gym. Local limestone is totally fine to climb after a rain, only actively wet limestone will keep you from quality climbing.
