Osage County is known for its gently rolling hills covered with old forests and greenery. Just west of Sand Springs and in the SE corner of Osage County, one hill in particular hides a great collection of almost 100 sandstone boulder lines. A popular spot among local climbers from both Tulsa and OKC and it's less than 20 minutes from downtown Tulsa. Unlike other nearby sandstone areas, the climbing style here is less focused on power and typical southern thuggery. Instead you’ll find a mixture of traversing and vertical technique complemented by crimping on the overhanging faces. The quality of rock at Shotgun varies from bullet-hard petrified mud deposits to sandfests that remind you of a day at the beach, but most of the established climbs are somewhere in between these extremes. Like most of the sandstone areas near Tulsa, the development and recording of climbs started in the early 2000s. The cleanest and more obvious climbs were established first on the Cube and Sky boulders starting with the classic Monkey Man (V5) and Fire in the Sky (V6). Parking is very limited and consists of just a couple dirt pullouts to the north-west of the main trail. No more than 10 cars fit here at a time so be sure to carpool. To get to the main area hike East a few hundred feet from the main dirt pullout to a set of sandstone and dirt stair steps and the main trail.
