Zen Pen’s short cliffs run along the Cimarron River, just west of Mannford, OK. Along the eastern edge of the Keystone Wildlife Management Area, this area is managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. The Keystone WMA, in particular, has regulations that are very accommodating for climbing and other recreational activities, but know that the WMA is primarily managed with hunting and fishing in mind. Climbers represent a very small user base. The VFW Post 7441 has graciously allowed not only parking in their dirt lot, but also trail development through their property to the main area. Make sure to park in the dirt/grass parking lot only. Parking on the asphalt is for customers of the VFW only. From the SW corner of the parking lot, hike west, following an established trail along a swamp, into a meadow, and then skirting the north end of a small forest before hitting a dry creekbed and the SE edge of the Purgatory area. Climbers originally parked in a dirt pullout alongside the railroad tracks to the north and hiked alongside the tracks to gain access to the river. However, parking and walking within 50ft of the railroad tracks is technically illegal. While rarely enforced, the climbing community became aware of this law after multiple climbers had their cars towed without warning. Be warned that this parking option is not recommended.
