Somehow, the majority of this area has been only recently developed. Though there are only a few boulders here compared to some of the larger areas, its high quality has garnered some attention. The Mushroom Boulder, despite being the lowest quality of the Rhodo Trail area boulders, sees the most attention due to its proximity to the car. While being slightly further from the car, Rhodo Cave is one of the only spots that stays completely dry in Coopers, and is great for climbing during rainy or snowy days, as both the rock and landings are protected. This cave is also home to Like Drops of Blood, one of the most sought-after hard problems in the area. With 41 problems from V0 to potentially around V15 in a gym-friendly style, there should be something for everybody here. If you are searching for a solid dose of quality gritstone in the V4 to V6 range, the Future Area has a cluster of modern classics a stone’s throw from each other. And though many of the climbs here resemble the gym, the seldom-visited I Dream of the Ocean V8, sitting off by itself, is one of the king lines of Coopers Rock, and should be sought after by anyone with good taste.
From the front gate, drive 2.6 miles towards the overlook. Drive 0.2 miles after passing the Tilted Tree Parking area and take the right fork as the road splits, heading downhill towards the Rhododendron Campground. Continue past the entrance to the campground, and pull around the cul-de-sac to the gravel parking area by Shelter #3 and the Mushroom Boulder. The Mushroom Boulder will be right in front of you. To get to the Future Area, hike 200 yards down the Rhododendron Trail and look for a faint climber’s trail on the right. After about 100 yards snaking through the trees, you will arrive at the Future Roof on your left. For Rhodo Cave, simply hike down the Rhododendron trail for about 7 minutes, passing the junction with Ridge Trail to your left. As soon as you see a small grey footbridge on the trail, walk about 20 yards past it, and take a left onto a faint climber’s trail. You should be able to see the large dark hole of Rhodo Cave on the hillside though the trees.
