Locals joke that this is the only rock climbing in the entire canyon, since visiting climbers pretty much mob the place and exclusively climb the same three or four climbs. It won’t take you long to figure out which climbs those are, but figuring out why those particular climbs are popular is puzzling. Locals joke that this is the only rock climbing in the entire canyon, since visiting climbers pretty much mob the place and exclusively climb the same three or four climbs. It won’t take you long to figure out which climbs those are, but figuring out why those particular climbs are popular is puzzling. Though there are a few areas that host a similar concentration of quality climbs, Tilted Tree does have a number of iconic problems throughout a range of grades. With a significant number of easy climbs, and its close proximity to the road, it’s no surprise the area as a whole became popular. Despite all the scrutiny from locals, Tilted Tree does provide the iconic gritstone experience, and there is basically a king line of every grade. Just walking in, the trail drops you into a massive boulder field, and you are immediately spat out in front of the iconic line Four Ton Katydid V2 to your left (see cover photo), and the Mother of All Slabs V9 right in front of you. It has the feeling of a blue-collar rock playground, with gritty grey stone in every direction, and brutal sandbags like Coral V7, Death Block V6, and Roof of Death V3 to keep you humbly at work. There are so many climbs here that just this area alone is big enough to fill a guidebook by itself, and we stupidly keep adding more. Happy exploring, and don’t get sandbagged!
Drive about 2.3 miles past the front gate to arrive at the Tilted Tree parking area, which is comprised of two pull-offs, one on each side of the road, and is now marked with clear signage. This parking area is about 0.5 miles from the overlook parking area. From the parking area, hike past a green gate down a gravel road for about a minute until you see a climber’s trail, usually marked with a small cairn, branching off downhill to the right. As you drop into the boulder field, a large slab will be seen immediately to the left (the Squirrel Soup Boulder). Continue past this boulder to the Tilted Tree Corridor and Snow Globe Area, or head right past the obvious Question Mark V5 to head towards the Fiddle Block, Moby’s Area, and eventually, the In-Between Area.
