The second most popular area in Coopers, as the name implies that it’s full of “classics”. There’s certainly some good lines and a high concentration of climbs here, and just as we saw in the Tilted Tree section, a handful of them see a lot of traffic while the best lines are generally overlooked. The second most popular area in Coopers, as the name implies that it’s full of “classics”. There’s certainly some good lines and a high concentration of climbs here, and just as we saw in the Tilted Tree section, a handful of them see a lot of traffic while the best lines are generally overlooked. This area is characterized by a high concentration of moderate climbs with good landings. If you show up with only one pad or a briefcase pad, this is a good place to circuit around. While it’s fun to create circuits here, there still are several hard lines for the more seasoned climbers interested in cranking hard. Moonstruck is a notable V10 of atypical style for the area, and in the Serpent Cave, (a great place to hide from the rain) you will find the fingery testpiece, Brass Serpent V10. But to me, the thing that really stands out about this area are the traverses. There are around 16 traverses here, and it’s really easy to climb with minimal padding. One such line, The Morning Wood Traverse, has become my favorite lap-runner in the area, connecting the classic Woody’s Arête V3 with a long traverse under the large roof of the Hangover Block. Though quite tall, this line is a rite of passage for gritstone mastery.
From the front gate, drive 2.6 miles to the overflow parking area (Parking #2 on the map), which is located just prior to the overlook parking area, and about 0.3 miles past the Tilted Tree Parking Area. On the left side of the road, near the beginning of the parking area is a kiosk that marks the start of the climber’s trail. Head down the climber’s trail for about 40 yards before arriving at the Entrance/Exit Boulders. You will immediately pass the Helicopter Roof on your left. If you continue straight about 50 yards further, an area opens up on the left. This is the Tendon Repair Kit area, which includes the exceedingly long “Hangover Block”. Dropping downhill will get you to “Where Tourists Dare”. Alternatively, heading down the trail another minute or so will get you to Sunset Wall on your left. The Moonchild Area is just downhill from it. This can also be a good way to access the In-Between Area, particularly the Diamond and the Cave sector. You can also park in lot #1 for quick access to the Hangover Block and Tendon Repair Kit areas, but it only has space for a couple vehicles.
