Being located within the Canyons, Black Velvet gets cooler earlier in the season and some may find it too cold during the peak of Winter. Black Velvet Canyon is located on the southern end of Red Rock Canyon, approached via SR160 (Blue Diamond Hwy). Good car ground clearance is generally required. As of late 2025, the road to Black Velvet has been recently flattened and it's possible to reaching there with less clearance. As this can change, be prepared. No fee or reservation needed. Reach SR160 via either SR159, 15 or 215. At the intersection of SR159 and SR160 continue 4.7 miles west until you can turn right into the Late Night Trailhead. From there head back east and then north for roughly 15-20 minutes (2.7mi) down the rocky dirt Black Velvet Rd to reach the Black Velvet Canyon Trailhead. All climbs within Black Velvet are located either on or on forks off of Black Velvet Trailhead.
