Mustang Canyon offers a nice escape from some of the other popular canyons, as it very lightly traveled. One of the boulders in Red Rock, Critically Acclaimed V10, lies deep on the approach and the trail to access can be difficult to follow. The boulders below the Monument crag offer a great cluster of solid easy and moderate climbs, with Anthem V8 being an excellent crimp traverse. As Mustang Canyon is one of the zones that sees less traffic from both climbers and hikers, the trails are fainter, and the cactus more abundant. It is highly recommended to be prepared with adequate approach shoes, and to not bring those that are susceptible to cactus spines such as pets or young children. Mustang Canyon is located on the southern end of Red Rock Canyon, approached via SR160 (Blue Diamond Hwy). Good car ground clearance is generally required. As of late 2025, the road to Mustang has been recently flattened and it's possible to reaching there with less clearance. As this can change, be prepared. No fee or reservation needed. Reach SR160 via either SR159, 15 or 215. At the intersection of SR159 and SR160 continue 4.7 miles west until you can turn right into the Late Night Trailhead. From there head back east and then north for roughly 15-20 minutes (2.7mi) down the rocky dirt Black Velvet Rd to reach the Black Velvet Canyon Trailhead. All climbs within Mustang are located either north of the Black Velvet Trailhead and only faint social trails exist to reach them.
