The Bliss Boulders sit mainly on sunny, exposed hillsides in Bliss State Park near Emerald Bay on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. All the areas are very close to the road and have short approaches, which makes Bliss perfect for quick sessions after work or for just going out for a few hours to climb. Bliss dries out fairly quickly in the spring and in late fall things stay climbable until the first big winter storm of the season. It’s a bit warm in mid summer and you will find that the rock here is not very friendly when the weather is hot. The rock is coarse granite with a cool golden hue to it. Expect to find everything from bulletproof patina to chossy, decomposing grain. There are a few double digit climbs, but the most common grades are in the Vb to V6 range. Because all the climbs are in a state park please obey the rules and be courteous to park officials. This updated Bliss section includes a lot of boulders and areas not mentioned in the Super Topo bouldering guide as well as many first ascents done after the publication of that guide. If you think you have done it all at Bliss, take a close look at the following pages and you might be surprised at what you have been missing. All bouldering areas at Bliss are state park land and no dogs are allowed, except in the campground on a leash. Each Bliss subarea has its own parking and approach information.
