Cisco Grove holds many good bouldering areas scattered along a maze of dirt roads. Most of the roads are generally in good shape and passable in a passenger car, although 4WD is mandatory in certain spots. The road conditions vary from year to year, so just check it out for yourself and be prepared to possibly not make it to your destination if you don’t have 4WD. The rock is solid granite and most of the boulders are very close to the road with minimal approaches. About 2 miles up the main road you will see good looking boulders on the right side of the creek, sitting on the slabs. These are on private land, it will be obvious by the over abundance of “No Trespassing” signs, do not go here. On a final note, rumor has it that certain areas at Cisco Grove have a lot of rattlesnakes, please watch your step. DRIVING: From Truckee go west on I-80 for about 18 miles and take the Cisco Grove exit. Turn right, then left on Hampshire Rocks Road, go 100 yds and turn right on Forest Road #85 and reset your odometer at the green gate. From the Bay Area take I-80 east and take the Cisco Grove exit. Go left over the freeway and connect onto the directions as coming from Truckee. All the driving directions in each sub section will refer to the “green gate” at the start of the dirt road as the starting point, so take note. FOR THE RIVER BOULDERS: From the green gate go 3.6 miles and park on the left in a fairly large pullout. Look SE across the river and you will see the obvious Master Block about 100 yds away. There are a few boulders just uphill from the Master Block and another cluster 300 yds upstream. This is the easiest spot to access if you don’t have 4WD.
