At Eagle Lakes Road off of I-80 there is a small amount of fun bouldering surrounding the Indian Springs rope climbing crag. The main attraction is “Endangered Species,” which is a spectacular highball V7 arête climb above a less than perfect landing. This problem is not to be taken lightly and only very experienced climbers should attempt it. Another area classic is the Vintage Wall. It’s reminiscent of the holds found at Mayhem Cove and 90 ft. Wall. Due to the lower elevation, the terrain and foliage here has a foothills feel to it, and you can definitely tell you’re well out of the Tahoe Basin. As with many of the areas in Tahoe, there is a lot of rock around here and one would think more bouldering potential exists. Also, be forewarned I have talked to several people that have seen rattlesnakes here, please be cautious and keep your eyes peeled. DRIVING/APPROACH: From Truckee drive west on I-80 for 20 miles and exit at the Eagle Lakes Road. Turn right and reset your odometer. For Endangered Species drive on Eagle Lakes Road for 0.6 miles and park right at the entrance to the Eagle Lakes Campground. Look east across the street and you will see the giant cleaved arête 50 yds from the road. For the boulders around the Indian Springs crag stop 0.1 miles before Endangered Species and park in a big pullout on the east side of the road just below some power lines. Look east and you will see the Vintage Wall 50 yds from the road. The other boulders are a few minutes walk above the Vintage Wall on the slabs en route to the crag.
