The impressive Split Rock is a favorite for Truckee locals looking for a quick fix. It’s a good sized granite boulder split in two pieces with climbs wrapping all the way around it. Most of the problems feel pretty highball so a few extra pads are nice. There are also several other good boulders in the area. If you don’t mind paying the entrance fee to Donner State Park you can skip the following approach directions and drive right up to the boulder. Simply drive past the kiosk and continue until you see the boulder just off the road.

DRIVING: Split Rock is located inside Donner State Memorial Park campground. To reach it take I-80 west from Truckee and exit on Donner Pass Road. Turn left and drive over I-80 to a 4-way stop. Turn left at the 4-way stop and continue past the gas stations for 0.4 miles. Park on the left where the road turns to dirt by the gravel pits.

APPROACH: Walk west on a trail that runs between the pond on your left and the campground on the right. The trail leads right to Split Rock after 5 minutes.
