The Sugar Pine Boulders are a vast collection of finely sculpted granite gems stretching for seven miles along General Creek. The boulderfield starts near Lake Tahoe and continues all the way to Lost Corner Mountain and beyond, into Desolation Wilderness. The area is divided into nine major zones and because the boulders go for so many miles, the rock changes as the elevation and exposure changes. The area is divided into nine major zones and because the boulders go for so many miles, the rock changes as the elevation and exposure changes. The rock is generally nicely textured granite with many unique features. On average the approach time is 30-60 minutes. Because the area is so huge it takes a little trial and error to get it dialed, but it’s really not that complicated. Almost all the boulders sit in and around General Creek and after a trip or two you will have your bearings. Common sense and perhaps a GPS are a few things that might help. Walk around, explore, have fun and you will find the spots. Strategy is key here as well. Sugar Pine "1" is definitely best approached from below on a mountain bike. Sugar "2" is a toss up and the deciding factor may be your lack of a good 4WD or lack of a bike. Either way it’s about an hour hike to come in from the bottom, or hike in from the top. For Sugar 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 it’s best to drive in Mckinney Rubicon and hike in from above. Sugar Pine is a magic spot that favors the adventurous boulderer. Embrace the incredible vastness of the area and enjoy exploring its many nooks and crannies. It is hands down one of the biggest bouldering areas in Tahoe.
