Trippy Rock is, well, trippy! Psychedelic, multicolored volcanic choss is the standard fare here. While it's a cool spot, it is by no means considered high-quality. Nonetheless, some fun bouldering surrounds the main cliff, which also has several sport climbs. If you live in Incline Village or want to experience volcanic stone for a day, it's worth a visit. Climbers have been frequenting the area for at least forty years, so it has historical appeal.

As a kid growing up in Incline, I remember going to Trippy Rock to hang out and party. Curiosity led to tennis-shoe bouldering, and it wasn’t long before we got climbing shoes and chalk bags to take our game up a notch. This was one of the first places I ever climbed, and when I went back to do the fieldwork for this guide, I was horrified remembering the padless, spotterless, clueless days of my childhood. Sound familiar?
Driving/Approach: From Incline Village, turn up Mt. Rose Hwy (431) and drive 2.9 miles, then turn left onto a dirt road and park immediately at the green forest service gate just below a rock outcropping. This outcropping holds a few boulders, but the main circuit is up the dirt road. To approach the main circuit, walk up the dirt road for 150 yards until you see Trippy Rock visible through the trees on your right. A well-worn trail leads to the base. The boulders are scattered around Trippy Rock; refer to individual boulder descriptions for specific locations and beta.
Explore Lake Tahoe from all levels with KAYA PRO. Drill down to the area, subarea, boulder and climb levels. Get approach information for each, and a variety of beta.
