The stone around White Rock Lake is immaculate; it’s some of the best quality I’ve seen anywhere around Tahoe. As the name implies the boulders are made of ultra clean white granite, most of which requires no scrubbing at all. I love slab climbing, and I have to say this place has the most perfect, flawless slabs I have ever climbed. Of course slabs are not the only thing here, but for some reason the overhanging rock is a little more blank, making it harder to find problems on the steeper faces. But almost every piece of rock that is less than vertical has perfectly sculpted features.The scenery is amazing here and this area is far removed from the more crowded spots around Tahoe. It’s a solid 1 hour drive from Truckee to White Rock Lake. For that reason I recommend coming here in the fall when the bugs are gone, camping by the lake and making a multiday trip out of it. You won’t regret spending several days here hanging out amongst the beautiful forest and climbing some incredible boulders. The fishing is also supposed to be good on the lake, so bring your gear if you want to catch some nice rainbows after your climbing session.
