Once a great mountain range that would rival the Himalayas of today, the Appalachian Mountains that stretch from Canada to Alabama have fought an all out brawl with time and erosion for the last million or so years. The street fight was hard fought, but eventually the forces of nature won out, sculpting the hills, valleys, and the East Coast's versions of "mountains" that we know today. Whether it's your first visit or fiftieth, KAYA makes your Horse Pens 40 days smoother, safer, and more dialed. As the Appalachians fade in Chattanooga, TN, the Lookout and its sister mountains unveil the treasures of the battle with erosion with multiple world class bouldering destinations. Areas such as Little Rock City (aka Stone Fort) and Rocktown draw climbers from the world over to sample some of the best/most accessible sandstone in North America. Luckily for Alabama, it saves the best for last. Sculpted by the ravages of time, Horse Pens 40 is home to acres of bulbous faces, blunt prows, delicate slabs, crimpy overhangs, and water grooves. The owners, Mike and Gina Schultz, are models for southern hospitality. Mike is one of the best storytellers you will ever meet, while Gina slings some of the meanest country cooking you will ever encounter. HP provides the maximum amount of problems for the least amount of effort. If you are in search of the double digit line, you might want to "go west young man," because the area lacks the soft sends needed to pad the spraycard. With over 100+ lines from V3-V5 and the same amount from V6-V8, this is the moderate climber's dream come true. Horse Pens is the Fontainebleau of the South, without the arrogance and the stench. Either for a day, a week, or a season, your trip to HP will have you wanting of more. If the weather permits, this is as good as it gets. The following information is courtesy of http://www.HP40.com: We are transitioning to RESERVATION ONLY CAMPING. For the quickest and most efficient on-site check in, all guests must sign in during office hours (8am-6pm Central Time). The main gate will be closed between 6pm and 8am CT. Please make your entry and exit plans around this policy. If you will be arriving later than 6pm for camping, call to let us know when you will arrive and we will get you in. If calling between 6pm-10:00pm, please call *2*5*6**458**35*45* for reservations and late arrival arrangements. (You know how to figure out the number above, right?) If calling after 10:00pm, call the HP40 24/7 Security/Assistance number listed on the gate upon arrival for late entry arrangements and any other assistance needed. Due to the additional costs and difficulty in dealing with late arrivals, there is now a late arrival fee of $20.00 per vehicle arriving after 12am (midnight). Any vehicle arriving on HP40 property between 12am (midnight) - 8am will be subject to this fee. IF THE MAIN GATE IS CLOSED, CALL THE HP40 SECURITY NUMBER ON THE GATE and CONTACT HP40 SECURITY BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO ENTER. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN OR ENTER THE CLOSED GATE WITHOUT TALKING TO HP40 STAFF, and receiving clearance to enter. Sorry, for any inconvenience this might cause. Any questions, etc, contact ashleyhp40 (at) g mail. com (You know what to do with this, right? If not, you probably wont be e-mailing us anyway. Just give us a call)
