This polarizing via ferrata blasts a path up the blankest wall on the Wombat. Inappropriate? Perhaps. Audacious? Without question. Prepared by Doug Phillips, the founder of Metolius, his intent was to provide access to Smith climbing for those with diminished capacity. Several rungs at the start were immediately chopped, but after Anna Soens, an incomplete paraplegic, climbed the route without aid slings, it gained legitimacy, and fulfilled Doug's vision. Arming up the stainless steel rungs (110 of them) is great fun, building a 5.10ish pump, while clipping the rungs for protection. Most climbers rap off after two pitches (use two 70 meter ropes), but it's possible to finish to the top of the Wombat via poorly-protected buckets leading to an anchor atop the summit ridge.
